Default Out On The Streets

With record numbers of homes being repossessed - thanks to Gordon Brown's mismanagement of the economy - and more and more young people finding it difficult to get their first step on the property ladder, one was moved to think what it must be like to be homeless (whilst recently studying a sculpture of a destitute woman holding a begging bowl) and compose the following verse:-

I sit alone with my bowl begging for food
Or money with which to buy a meal
Watching others pass me by
Some intentionally ignoring me; others stopping to talk
As I remember the life I left behind me
And wonder if the lives of the passers-by
Inwardly reflect my own of rejection, exclusion and self-harm.

John Lennon once wrote “All these lonely people, where do they all come from?
“All these lonely people, where do they all belong”?
As I sit, lonely and alone, I see loneliness in the eyes of others who pass by
Unable or unwilling to communicate with each other
They go their ways and I remain in mine
Wallowing in self-pity, fearful for my future.

I feel hungry and thirsty
Not just for something to eat and drink
As the few pennies others give me will soon buy me a burger and a coke
But for the company of others
And affection shown to one’s fellow man over a prepared meal
Or, at least, meaningful conversation over a dinner table.

I live on the streets you see; I have no home,
Nowhere to eat or sleep, nowhere to call my own.
The pavement is my mattress, the abandoned brick my pillow
I no longer feel I belong anywhere or to anyone
I don’t even have a name; I’m just one of the homeless
Momentarily brought to others’ attention on the news but quickly forgotten about when they sit down to eat.

Where has my life gone I often wonder
And where is it going too?
Right now I seem to be drifting
Or pushed by others, but with no real purpose.
Deprived of food and shelter, and a sense of direction
One questions the meaning of life.

So look at me as you pass me by
I am no less a human being than you
I have feelings too.
And as you return home at the end of your day
Think one day you could find yourself in similar position to me.

I wonder if anybody in either blue buggins or red buggins remembers Cathy Come Home I doubt it worries them with their snouts in the trough and their taxpayer funded homes

I suspect that there are plenty of UKIP supporters who don't give 2 hoots about the homeless either. There are a few posters here who genuinely despise those who live in social housing so they won't have sympathy for those less fortunate than themselves. By the end of the year 1.7 million families could be in homes that are in negative equity. Unemployment is soaring and so are repossesssions. Interest rates are more likely to go up when CPI passes 4% in the next few weeks (RPI, a more realistic measure of inflation is fast heading toward 10%).

There will be a few more people out selling Big Issue than there are now, but a lot of people are in for an even more painful shock. There are virtually no new social houses being built as they come as part of the big developments. As the building industry is tottering on the brink of colllapse it is a truism to say that there will not be enough social housing to go round.

For those who have not lived on benefits and are about to do so, you are in for a massive shock. I have 3 friends who have been made redundant from engineering companies in the last 3 months; 2 have not found anything else and live on the fast dwindling redundancy money and the other is contracting. The worst is not yet on us. Time to show sympathy I think.

I believe that the government is looking at putting standard of living into the new Bill of Rights. Perhaps this is something we should support...

Well I was not born at the time of its orignal broadcast but it formed part of a project I wrote on TV history when I studied Film and TV history as part of my degree. The DVD remains one of the most watched in my collection.

Now why didn't Ethiopia think of that? Or the Ukraine or Somalia?

The world economy is on the way down, I'm not sure why this particular area is Brown's fault. It is certainly going much the same way in many parts of Europe, Australia and the US of course.

It's Brown's fault because he also claimed credit for the 'good times' - which he had nothing to do with either.

He does have some blame to carry - he got the country into all the debt the Treasury is currently carrying.

Gordon the Moron inherited a good economical situation which had been engineered by the IMF and World bank after Major(balls-up) tried to shadow the ERM and went cap in hand to said organisations

He was then fortunate that with China expanding it's manufacturing base a global boom followed which he claimed credit for in the UK boasting of the ending of the boom and bust cycle well now this is coming back to haunt him Prudence has been well and truly f*cked by this man

He sold a substantial amount of our gold reserves when the price was at an all time low

He was in the government which over interfered in the business sector, his mate Just call me Tony buttered them up while GtM shafted the business sector particularly the small business sector

He inflated the state payroll by a ridiculous amount and increased the number of people on benefit dependency

Tax credits must be one of the most inefficient ways of giving money back to taxpayers ever devised

In short the man will be remembered as a useless f*ckwit which I have said since day one

The problem is the official opposition - the boy dave glee club - are just as shambolic
