My wife has just read this quote which I think just about nails it. "Faith is believing what you know isn't true. If it were true, you wouldn't need faith"! It is taken from a book about the 'Mitford girls'

At some point there was somebody who had faith that the world was not flat...

Hebrews 11: 1-3

1Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. 2This is what the ancients were commended for.
3By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

Whoa. Heavy. Thanks for that. Food for thought, hmm?

I’d be very wary of quoting anything from the Mitford girls. Apparently, Diana & Unity were out & out Fascists (Unity rumoured to have been extra ‘close’ to Hitler) & Jessica a staunch communist in the USA.

...and one, Diana IIRC, is Max Moseley's mum and the surviving one is the Duchess of Devonshire. The dead ones are buried in Swinbrook churchyard a couple of hills away from me. Hitler was best man at Oswald Moseley and Diana Mitford's marriage.

I know all that. I just thought it was a very good quote, but on the other hand I can see why some people of the Church going variety, might not think it's a good quote!

The problem with the quote is that it doesn't take into account what faith really is. The Greek word 'pistis' translated 'faith' in most New Testaments can equally be translated as 'trust'. The quote only makes sense if faith means 'believing something to be true' whereas the Christian understanding is believing someone to be true, therefore trustworthy.

We exercise trust every day, not in any religious sense, but every time we cross a bridge, for example.

Was Hitler the best man or was he just a wedding guest?
