One of them even volunteered to take part in the programme.

For that matter how confident that you know the identity of your natural father, let alone the identity of your grandfather, and much less your great-grandfather?

Look at it this way. Assume that extramarital sex was in reality engaged in by one couple in twenty over the years.

That yields the probability of your mothers husband being the sperm donor that resulted in you being not 1,0 but 0,95

On the same basis your father also had only an 0,95 probability of his mothers husband being the sperm donor which since 0.95 of 0.95 gives a probability of 0,90 that you actually know who your grandfather really was, so we’re down to a one chance in ten that you may not know your own grandfather!

Great grand-dad?

Working with the same probability and discounting the very significant Victorian immorality, a thing actually much higher in the early years than it became, that 0,9 probability for your grandfather now reduces to just marginally over 0,8 so now there’s two chances in ten you don’t know who your real great-grandfather actually was!

Now I’m not for a single moment suggesting that you are not 100% legitimate, simply showing how what we know with absolute certainty, i.e. with a probability of 1, when push comes to shove may turn out to be someway less that 1 after all.

The moral to my little playing with numbers is to be found in Matthew 7 : 1 – 5, and I should pay heed to Matthew 7 :6.

You need only take a look at photographs of my father or grandfather to see that we are related. A picture of grandfather in the full dress of the Hants Militia - spiked helmet and all - hangs on my wall and people often comment on the family likeness.

Possibly your family rose from chav circles in which such connections were unusual.

Re shotgun weddings all one can say is that they have at least the decency to be getting married, but we really don't need to know the details of the tent the bride intends to wear.

This is the stuff of jokes - not respectability.

Incidentally have you noticed how the chavs - pregnant or otherwise - are now using pink stretch limos for their tat weddings?

In the austerity society of tomorrow those gas-guzzlers should be the first chav icons to go.
