But what does living in a high crime society mean in practice? My experience of crime is: 2 thefts (one umbrella, one bicycle) and one assault (mild). I have never been burgled (unlike my next door neighbour) and I have never had my car broken into (unlike my sister and my mother). So I assume that I have got off lightly. But have I?

What is your experience of crime? (And why don't our politicians do anything?)
That is what I want to know, I have been waiting for 18 months for them to act against a criminal.

Complete Cure For Crime

I think that because of the miserable failure of British politicians to cure crime (and sort out other problems), the electorate assumes that it is difficult to do. They are being too charitable: the issue isn't the difficulty of the problem, the issue is the hopelessness of our politicians.

Why British politicians won't sort out crime puzzles me, as they would make themselves more popular if they did. Some problems (such as the scandalous Common Fisheries Policy), they can't sort out even if they wanted too, because they have given their powers away, but they are still largely in control of the criminal 'justice' system.

Maybe they haven't got any ideas, maybe they haven't got the political will, maybe they don't want to sort out crime. I just don't know.
Crime is more a social and cultural disease than simply a matter of law enforcement and must be treated that way. Harsh law enforcement and penal systems will generally do little if any to help and may hinder. After all prisons are little more than universities of crimes and harshness tends to create resentment. The focus should mainly be on reforming society to remove crime but when it comes to law enforcement and penal systems the focus should be on rehabilitiation as far as is possible.

BBC NEWS | England | Bristol | Man held after firearm incident
Quote:

A man has been arrested after a teenager was threatened with what is believed to be a firearm in a recreation ground.
Police said a 30-year-old man is being held on suspicion of robbery and possessing a firearm following the incident in Long Ashton on Sunday.
A man allegedly approached youths and threatened the teenager with a firearm, demanding a cigarette. Members of the public are believed to have helped detain the suspect.
Opposite my house today. I wasn't involved.

Without crime, lawyers would have one less money pit they could exploit and without large numbers of lawyers, there would be less to recruit the equally swindling politicians from.

I had my jaw split after someone tried to rob me in the main street and my front tooth was knocked out.

My bike was stolen out of my locked garage and I have witnessed many assaults and crimes when working in a supermarket.

Last week someone came up to a group of us at night and asked “do you want to be sliced up” presenting a knife.
