If your maternal line was Jewish, then you are Jewish by definition.

If your paternal line was Jewish then you will be accepted for “classes” without interview and following various formalities depending on the sect will become a full blown Jew with all that entails.

So that means that, assuming you have not attended “classes” you are NOT "part" Jewish, (except in the Nazi racial model) though you will be part whatever the race or ethnicity was of your father's father's grandmother!

Having a “trim”?

I always thought of the practice as being a case of extreme optimism, after all, fancy cutting a bit off before knowing how long it was going to be!
