Default The English: fat, dumb drunks

The people of England, the cradle of Shakespeare, Newton, Brunel and Dickens, are dismissed today as 'overweight, binge-drinking, reality TV addicts'.

The new 'Rough Guide to England' - published around the world - suggests England would be among the last destinations on any traveller's wish list.

The English are 'overweight, binge drinking, reality TV addicts', says new Rough Guide | the Daily Mail

The Rough Guide continues: "It's a nation that prides itself on its patriotism - yet has a Scottish prime minister, an Italian football coach and a Greek royal consort."

It lampoons the national obsession with the weather and questions whether increased personal wealth has created a happier nation.

"A two-day cold snap is discussed as if it were the onset of a new Ice Age and a week above 25 degrees starts rumours of a drought," it states.

"The English have become obedient consumers rather than active citizens, with brand loyalty the nearest thing to religious/spiritual belief.

I'd concur with those findings.
Still, at least we're not Welsh.

I don't think everyone is like that. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that most people aren't like that at all, just a highly vocal and highly visible minority. Being paid by the government to sit at home all day and watch Trish certainly isn't my idea of 'having a life'.

I'd say that covers about 50% of the population.

Regretfully there is much truth in this.

No we don't. The United Kingdom has a Scottish Prime Minister, not England.
As for the English football team having an Italian coach, depends whether he's worth it. If he gets the results, who cares?

Greek Royal Consort... well the Queen is hardly English.

I agree with the above. And why do they even point out that the Prime Minister is Scottish? Since Scotland is part of the UK we are going to have Scottish Prime Minister's from time-to-time. Just like the USA is going to have a President from Texas or California occasionally.

Among my objections to UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown is that he and his party have weakened our Union of the UK (with devolution) and refuse to give England equal status with Scotland within the Union (i.e. an English Parliament to match the powers of the Scottish Parliament Gordon Brown was so keen to set up) and the fact that Gordon Brown won't give us that EU Constitution referendum he and his party promised us at the last General Election.

One of the comments after the article on the link above left by a reader of the Daily Mail website:

Paul S. in Vancouver, Canada, wrote (brief extract) "You will not find a better sense of humour anywhere in the world....."

And another comment (extract) left after the Daily Mail article on the link in the last posting to this thread (and on the link in the first posting to this thread):

Emma in Auckland, New Zealand, wrote "....there is a lot to like about the UK which might have been why I stayed for so long."

Thank God for that, given that the same guide opinioned that the Welsh were mainly slim, intelligent and moderate sensible drinkers.

Lumping us in with the English would have dragged down our averages.
