Iguana tail tastes a lot like duck.

My question would be "Why?"
That said, aligator steaks are pretty good.

Didn't want to upset the locals by refusing it point blank.

Only later was I given the advice to claim that anything you didn't fancy you could get away without eating by claiming it was “against to your religion” to eat such things.

Another bit of advice was if you’re chewing on something that seems tasty and not too grisly if a grinning local asks you if you know what you’re eating always say “yes”.

Otherwise whatever it is will be described in the most detailed way making whatever it is even worse by the knowledge of how it was caught / killed / eviscerated / whatever.

Yes, I understand.
Had a similar experience in Hong Kong on a business trip.
The nature of the business meant very late/early morning for dinner.
Not an option for our hotel but the restaurant across the street was 24 hours.
We decided to have fish - picked it out from the fish tank.
I was given the best bits - the head, the eyes.
And the waiter stood over me like a dinner lady to ensure that I enjoyed the stuff.

Almost anything is decent when eaten with a good chilli or BBQ sauce.
