Default Aussie King of England and France.

Aussie Mike the true King of England - National - theage.com.au

I find this all actually extremely intriguing even if it doesn't mean much. It does actually look like this guy who left England decades ago has a better claim than the Queen(who doesn't?) or even Franz Duke of Bavaria.

Did anyone see the Tony Robinson program? I found it fascinating and it did seem to prove Edward IV's illegitimacy. I mean Henry VII had a feeble claim anyway and his marriage to Edward's daughter would not have done much if she was actually descended from royalty.

I saw it. I feel sorry for the girls that had to get their hair cut twice though!

What was interesting was that he was a republican.

Very down to earth fella. There was a documentary on this years ago when reporters turned up at his house to tell him. His family already worked it out.

Most Australians are. Although this guy was a British immigrant.

He lives in Deniliquin way out in the bush in Ned Kelly country on the Victoria and NSW border. I'm not much of a fan of Australia I'll admit, particularly the bush, and I'd hate to live there.

If it were a choice between Charles and this guy, I think I'd take this guy.

Default Australia, Head of State, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth

The man allegedly says (at the end of the article on the link in the first posting to this thread) "I could volunteer to be Australia's first Head of State."

Australia has its own Head of State: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth of Australia.

Well this guy has a better right than her or even the Duke of Bavaria to that position.

But anyway the clamours for republicanism are overwhelming here. They recently had a big conference called 2020 with many different delegates from actors to youth workers and they had focus groups and all that. And it republicanism was an almost universal theme.

Australia 2020 - www.australia2020.gov.au
http://www.australia2020.gov.au/docs...ial_report.doc

From the goverance stream.

The participants of the Australian Governance stream set forth the ambition of a new Australian republic......A top priority in this stream was the need for an Australian republic, to be enabled by a proposed two-stage process, with wide community involvement and ownership of the outcome.

And this was just everyday people brought together to work on ideas about Australia's future.

The republic got 45% of the vote in 1999 even though alot of republicans voted no because of the specific model offered. So it is only a matter of time.

http://vic.republic.org.au/index_fil.../MelbRep02.PDF

Even before Australians voted in the November 6 1999 referendum to republicanise
the head of state, two things were already abundantly clear. One was that the
monarchy was pretty much a dead issue for most Australians. The other was that the
model on offer was not supported by a majority of people. Because death of the
monarchy and design of the office were conflated in the proposal, we need to be
careful in interpreting the outcome.

Death of the Monarchy.

The negative result was not an endorsement of the monarchic status quo, except by
default. Death of the monarchy was evident in the official No case for the referendum.
In the 10 reasons for voting No that ran over 8 pages, the Queen was not mentioned
once. For the hard-heads who put this together, there was no currency in mentioning,
let alone championing, the monarchy. The strategy was to highlight flaws in the
proposed model.
The weightiest arguments for the status quo, made by Justice Michael Kirby and
others, were more constitutional than monarchical. These were for maintaining a
proven constitutional system and ensuring an independent office that could properly
exercise the reserve powers required for a the parliamentary responsible government
form of executive. If Australia were to republicanise its head of state, conservatives
like Dame Leonie Kramer supported popular election of the office. That was to keep
the head of state independent of the ruling politicians of the day.

Many reasons. I'm no fan of the climate or landscape. I love the British isles and Western Europe in that respect. I also don't much like that culture, it is becoming very American and very jingoistic with its nationalism. It looks towards Asia and America very much these days and seems to have little nostalgia for the Empire or motherland, which is not someting I mind, I think it is good I don't think we need much of a connection with somewhere so far away. It just means it holds little attraction for me.
