You are using libertarian in the American way, right? I consider myself both a decentralist and libertarian but that doesn't mean I have a hard-on for Milton Friedman or Ayn Rand although I don't mind them. I don't think we need to copy the US on this usage.

I would suggest that all libertarians must believe in negative liberty, but many don't seem to understand that.
Ayn Rand would tear you to shreds for comparing her to a libertarian.

Negative liberty is far too simplistic a concept however.

But in the end liberty is a social thing and a mass of isolated individuals is not going to do much to defend liberty. This has always been both the Conservative and Radical pluralist take on liberty and it strikes home hard against the methodological individualism of much classical liberal ideology.

Have you actually read her relevant works? Of course she understood that. She said the state and the legal system should protect individual rights as its first priority.
