Ukip has not to my knowledge been asked to speak at the Oxford students free speech day before? Today it has been announced that Nick Griffin from the BNP will be speaking on Monday! BNP supporters probably think this is bloody marvellous! I think the opposite, they'll be walking into the "Lions Den trap" to be heckled and shouted down! Bigger fools them!

One thing you can be sure of - Nick Griffin is nobody's fool. Dislike his politics if you like, but he is very savvy. He'll have thought this one through very carefully.
The point to really worry about is how come Griffin can get this exposure and UKIP AKA Farage cannot?

I'm Nigel's number one fan on this forum which everyone knows, so the reason I think Nigel hasn't been asked is because he is too good a public debater! I would presume there are more pro EU than anti EU Oxford students, so they wouldn't like to lose the debate!

I'd never believe that
![]() It might be the case that he was invited but didn't want to share a platform with the BNP which is understandable, you could imagine the headline stories.

Not a very nice thing to do whether you agree with someone or not (unless it was Heath where it would have been perfectly justifiable to refuse him an Honorary Degree in view of him selling out his country to the enemy). As many will recall, soon after the reported Oxford snub of Lady Thatcher - the University of Buckingham asked her to be their Patron. |

Mr. Farage got the better of a Conservative the last time he appeared on BBC 1 Television Question Time (a few months ago). I also saw him on 'The Record - Europe) on BBC News 24 Television (earlier this year I think) win a brief discussion about immigration in which a pro-immigration UK Green Party MEP had appeared to try to defend the gigantic tide of immigration we here in the UK are experiencing from eastern europe.

I am under the impression that some of these debates about the EU (followed by votes) have possibly been 'won' by the europhiles before they even take place. It seems that there may be more europhiles in the audiences (and, therefore, more votes for the pro-EU side).
I recall that UKIP MEP Mr. Derek Clark participated in a debate about the EU held in the south-west of the Irish Republic not so long back - which was won by the pro-EU side. Mr. Clark noticed (upon arriving at the venue where the debate was held) that a big notice displaying the EU flag and a message stating that the building (which was displaying the notice) had been partly or wholly paid for from an EU grant was situated opposite the entrance to the premises where the debate he attended took place. Perhaps pro-sovereignty politicians should only attend these debates (in the UK) when they have been given clear proof/evidence that the audience accurately reflects strands of public opinion as found in opinion polls on EU matters. I can imagine that the reason Nigel is not there is because the debate appears to be about free speech but is in a way focussed on holocaust denial, rather than the subject of free speech per se.
Both Griffin and Irving are - broadly speaking - holocaust deniers (in terms of the total number of deaths, rather than denying the whole thing took place) Quote:
