the decent thing to have done was to resign last night, happily I had a ticket for the ballet booked some months ago before I knew the date of the game so whilst millons of people suffered I tucked into Steak and Ale Pie followed by Cheese and Biscuits and Coffee and then watched The Moscow Ballet perform a superb adapatation of Sleeping Beauty.

I am glad you enjoyed the performance.

I did not watch last night's football match between England and Croatia - I heard the result on Newsnight and could not believe that we are out and that no part of the UK will be in the next European Football Cup.

Most of the callers to Talksport radio's extended sports programme last night and early this morning wanted the England manager out and some said (as you suggest above, RJT) that he should have gone last night.

He told radio news late yesterday evening that he was not going to resign - but the Sun newspaper website was saying from late last night that he would be sacked. i never supported McClaren as England team football manager.

What a sad state of affairs - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all out of the European Cup before it has even begun.

I wonder when the last time was that England was not in the European Cup. Quite a while ago, I think.

This will not help the Labour Government - they could do with "the feel-good factor" in the country. One report on Teletext this morning said that England not qualifying for the European Football Cup could actually cost the UK economy £2 billion.

1984 was the last time we failed to qualify, if there is a positive to take out of this such an event being a problem for this lying government could be consided as one, however the cost to the ecnomy is of course not in the wider national intrest so I expect like yourself it is difficult to rejoice about.

Yes, it is bad news all 'round - we aren't in the next European Cup and the economy won't get the 'feel-good factor' boost which can come from a national team doing well.

Someone said on the radio a little earlier today that Labour could actually be helped (initially) by the departure of the England football team manager because the story is dominating news bulletins and has pushed Chancellor Darling off the newspaper front pages. This is something which Labour wants in view of the bad publicity it has got in recent days over the loss of the child benefit department computer discs and Darling's embarrassing determination to avoid giving media interviews since news of the loss of the confidential discs broke.

Tell me, RJT... ...do these kinds of things have comfortable seating?

I'm asking because I went to see Alice Cooper at the NEC Arena not so long back and was so uncomfortable I decided never to darken the NEC's door again.

But see, ballet, I could get into that. If there was comfortable seating. I'm not talking Lay-Z-Boy spec, but just enough to actually not have a numb backside for the next 24 hours.

Any opinion on such matters?

Actually, we are extremely happy up here. We had the hardest group and we did so well to be top of it for most of the time, to beat France twice, to beat Ukraine once and to only be knocked out in the 91st minute of our last game.

It has been a long, long time since Scotland did anything that dramatic in football.

As a result we have shot up the rankings to 13th in the world according to FIFA in October. The November results will be out tomorrow (Friday) in time for the World Cup Qualifiers - hopefully this time we will get a much easier group with our new seeding.
