What would be the Liberal answer!

In the Sunday Times there is a report from the "Study by the Centre for Crime and Justice", stating that knife crime in England and Wales has more than doubled since 2005, up from 25,000 in 2005 to 64,000 in 2007, or 175 knife robberies a day! All regular posters on this forum know how I'd solve this problem, but I'd like to hear the more Liberal answer!

Speaking as a liberal, i.e. someone who believes in liberty, lock them up.

Above all freedoms is the idea that if you do something wrong then you are punished.

Not sure there's a lot the government can do on this, other than increase spending on enforcement. It's already illegal to carry knives/offensive weapons in public without good reason.

I'm a classical liberal/libertarian. I would lock them up and allow the right to bear arms so individuals can defend themselves.

What possible justification is there to carry weapons?

Personally I would never own a gun, but I don't want a nanny state telling people that they cannot own guns.

There's no good reason. If you have a problem, phone the Police. Legalising weapons is not a good idea. Who's going to teach you how to use it responsibly - or more importantly - when *not* to use it? Sorry, but the only way you're getting your hands on a gun as far as I'm concerned, is by joining the armed forces or becoming an authorised firearms officer.

Or I move to America and get more freedom than I would ever get in the EU, socialist paradise that is the UK. Preferrably New Hampshire, where there is low crime rates and they have the ability to open carry guns in public.

Sure, the US, where they feature such crazy contradictions as - you can freely shoot someone who's illegally on your property, but if they climb the 20,000 foot fence to drown themselves in your swimming pool, then you're liable.

BTW, reporters without borders have the UK pegged as a freer Country than the USA. And I'll take my free universal healthcare any day of the week.
