I blame Blair. He deserves to be blamed - even if he's not responsible.

Indeed, reported problems.
There are about 26M cars in UK. Total vehicles number about 33M.
If, on average, cars developed a fault (other than trivial things like bulbs) just once in 10 years, that would still equate to 2.6M faults per year. Or more than 7 thousand a day. The chances are that a fair proportion of those are fuel system related problems.

Given the current "bad fuel" publicity, it's probably a fair bet that many of the fuel system faults that would have happened anyway are being blamed on bad fuel.

In short, I'm not sure that the figures are robust enough yet to be certain that Tesco or Morrisons are to blame.

I'll have a browse around to see if any better data has come to light.

Go read HYS. Either there's a lot of people BSing or there's a direct correlation between this problem and filling up at Tesco/Morrisons. Too much of a cluster for there to be nothing in it.

It could be a consignment of Taurean dung.
Reports from deepest Cornwall to Dundee hardly suggests a cluster.
HYS?
Got a link?

Cause and effect cluster, not geographic cluster.

An AA source has told the BBC traces of silicon, which should not be in unleaded petrol, have been found in tests carried out by the petroleum industry.
There ya go.

The penalty for supplying fuel which does not meet industry standards is a £5,000 fine.
So, thousands of cars and people affected and it's a five grand fine?
Perhaps if it were five million, per incident, they'd be a bit more careful.

Tesco own 30% of Greenergy. Greenergy are based in Purfleet and supply 'biofuel' to Tesco and Morrisons. Greenergy buy their fuel on the 'spot market' and have no real control on its quality, they then dose it with their own biofuel. They have obviously not done any quality control checks on their fuel and released it into the market place off-spec. This is going to cost Tesco a ton of money and serve them right - leave the experts to sell fuel and let them get back to bread and milk !!!
See, told you it was teh global warming.
