Taylor would be proud of you..........

But we engineers generally try to make things simpler rather than more complicated.
like
cos x = (e^x+e^jx)/2
rather than
cos x = x-x^2/2! +x^4/4!- x^6/6!+…..etc

Maybe that's why engineering is a science and mathematics is an art.
But I have a foot in both camps.........

Sounds like a barrel of laughs.

Did anybody hear a Radio 4 programme last week taken from a book by some guy who's a bit of a nutter.

Apparently, however, he was able to memorise correctly thousands of the recurring digits of pi and he recited them for 5 hours in at attempt to beat the world record.

I can't imagine how anybody could achieve this mind-numbing feat.

I can't imagine who would want to sit there and listen to it, either.

Um... Pi doesn't have recurring digits. It's irrational and transcendental; if it were rational then it would either come to an end (1/5 for example) or have a recurring pattern. But it doesn't. Because it's irrational.
I can only remember 80 digits...

Do I have to make things simpler?...

Have you considered a job in government or the Civil Service?

I would think that singularly inappropriate. Given that the government can make such a monumental furk up on the costing of the Olympics, I wouldn't trust any of them to teach basic arithmetic to primary school children.
2.4 + imagination + screw ups = 9.6
Then some.

Hey, even I don't understand their workings, ModernUKIP.

Also, I'm much smarter than the Government. I bet they can't even differentiate a basic equation.
Or raise two to the power of four, for that matter.

Sadly, that probably wouldn't be too far off the mark for a large proportion of the population in general and, I suspect, a large proportion of those who post here. Some even refute Newton's equations of motion.

But, what bothers me more is the general attitude towards mathematics. People seem to attach no shame in admitting that they have little or no maths skills. In fact, even the word "admitting" doesn't get it in the right context. "Accepting" might be better.
Standards in literacy also seem to leave something to be desired.

I think it is a great pity that free school education up to age 16 or more doesn't produce better numeracy and literacy skills.

Given that the A-level pass rate continues to rise, one might expect such skills to be improving also. In my observation, the reverse seems to be the case.

Just my thoughts.

Try girls. They're quite fun.
But I'm 15. And vowed to celibacy.
I assure you, if doing equations in your spare time interests you, you don't need to take a vow of celibacy - it'll happen by itself.

What's wrong with everyone these days? Can't you go out with girls without the evening ending up in the sack?
All lads under 25 these days are total fairys.
Im 28 and the last few girls ive been home with have been 18, 19 and 21.
I now have a 16 year old after me who says she wants "a real man".
Thats the proof how pathetic modern young lads are.

You made my point so much more eloquently than I did.
Thank you, TE.
