The EU always likes to lecture the USA about the death penalty, despite the fact many Europeans support the death penalty. Very interesting article suggesting other reasons why Germany abolished the death penalty..

There is a large Roman Catholic population in Germany who have always opposed the abomination that is the death penalty.

Roman Catholics tend to be against the death penalty (i.e. state murder) and the present (German) Pope has rightly condemned it (as have previous Popes).
