The latest figures from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions show how many people visited the UK's top tourist attractions in 2006:

1. Blackpool Pleasure Beach (Lancashire) 5.73 million (-4%)
2. Tate Modern (London) 4.92 million (+21%)
3. British Museum (London) 4.83 million (+7%)
4. The National Gallery (London) 4.56 million (+9%)
5. Natural History Museum (London) 3.75 million (+22%)
6. Science Museum (London) 2.42 million (+19.8%)
7. Victoria and Albert Museum (London) 2.4 million (+24%)
8. Tower of London (London) 2.08 million (+7.9%)
9. St. Paul's Cathedral (London) 1.63 million (+17%)
10. National Portrait Gallery (London) 1.6 million (+4%)

All the top 10 attractions bar the Tower of London and St. Paul's Cathedral are free to enter. After the Tower and St. Pauls (which is partly free and partly paid-for) the next most popular charged attractions are Kew Gardens (Surrey/London) and Edinburgh Castle.

I'd say the best out of that list is definitely the British Museum. We're lucky to have arguably the finest museum in the world available to us for free.
