Default 'London is subsidising rest of UK by £13 billion a year'

Today’s Independent reports that:

"London is bankrolling less affluent areas of the country to the tune of more than £13bn a year, new research reveals today.

The report from Oxford Economics, an independent think-tank, shows that the average person living or working in the capital pays about £1,740 a year more in tax than he or she gets back in public spending on infrastructure such as roads and schools. The South-east and East Anglia contribute more than £1,000 a head to the nation's coffers each year, while the rest of the country is a drain on Whitehall."

Are you going to set up a London Democrats Party?

It's big enough.

London has the largest and most successful regional economy in the UK, contributing a greater proportion of tax revenues to the government than any other region. However, there is a large gap between what London pays to the government in taxes and what it receives in public spending. This is often called the London Deficit. The London Chamber of Commerce recently estimated the deficit to be between £10 and £20 billion.
London has it easy compared to the regions, especially rural areas. Cornwall is one of the poorest areas in Europe thanks to decades of under-spending and under-investment. Less per head is spent here than almost anywhere else in the UK.

From the article from One London:

Public services are also among the worst in the country,

A Tube, fleets of buses AND an overground rail system? The largest Police force in the Country?

Getting around London was a breeze compared to the hour or so I have to wait between buses here, if they even turn up.

I don't want to get into a regional spat with you, ModernUKIP, but according to Oxford Economics, Londoners pay £13.1 billion (£1741 per head) more into the Exchequer than they get out, whereas the South West receives £5.6 billion (£1114 per head). And don't forget that five of the ten poorest boroughs in the UK are in London.

No doubt most of the money from G. Brown Esq. goes to the bits of the South West that vote Labour, so I'm sure you are right when you complain of the lack of investment in Cornwall, which votes Tory or Lib Dem in general elections and UKIP in the Euros...

As far as I am aware, Cornwall is THE poorest region in the UK. And given what London has compared to the rest of the Country, I think it's about time the rest of the Country received spending to catch up.

The level of affluence in any region has very little to do with state spending. In fact, too much state expenditure would be positively harmful as people come to rely on the public purse rather than private enterprise.

Making us put up with all the guff that Red Ken comes out with is worth £13bn a year, don't you think London?
