Restricting gun ownership clearly does not help reduce gun crime as has been pointed out - some countries with more liberal laws have fewer gun crimes and some have more. So the real cause of gun crime has nothing to do with access to guns but something else. Therefore guns should not be targetted but rather the cause behind the crimes.

I do not know what the cause is. My point is simply that the government approach is to use a blunt instrument to affect the outcome. i.e. ban gun ownership to reduce gun crime. However this might or might not work but the government should try to target the real cause otherwise they are iinflicting repressive measures on others.
The goal should be to target the cause to affect the outocme, not just try to regulate, legislate and clamp down on related issues along the way which just lead to complications and distortions and do not solve the real problem.
