Branches of Morrisons within the London OM25 Orbital area don't accept cheque payments any more. Cash or credit card only.

Cheques I couldn't care less about,. If they stop using cash, then I will have to take my business elsewhere (even if I do tend to use cards at the moment.)
Tesco already have a cashless store. Sainsbury's plan to follow suit.

Default Cashless supermarkets

They won't be seeing much of me in their "cashless" stores in that case.

If it works, they plan to roll it out nationwide. I believe that you use your cards for some payments (say over £5), and if you want to buy something small, then you have to 'charge up' a different card which can be used to pay for small stuff (e.g. put £10 on it to pay for a pint of milk/chewing gum etc).

They refuse cash off me, they find themselves in court over legal tender issues. Easy.

They reserve the right to refuse it, banks do it too. Ever tried to pay in a certain amount of coinage before? E.g £10 worth of pennies?

I looked into this a short while back. Here's the limits:

£2 - Any Amount
£1 - Any Amount
50 Pence - £10
20 Pence - £10
10 Pence - £5
5 Pence - £5
2 Pence - £0.20
1 Penny - £0.20

Next time the council wants your council tax payment, do it in quid coins - they can't legally refuse it.

Excellent, I have saved that, that's going to come in very useful.

I wonder, has anyone on the forum any experience of Ofcom?
In my experience of Ofcom, from an industry point of view as a telecom company, is that they are a good regulator. As regulators go they tend to be efficient and helpful. I have no experience of how they deal with complaints though.

Did you know, Harry, that the evil hand of the EU can be felt even in this area? Last month some EU Comissioner said they wanted a pan-EU regulator of telecommunications.

In other words they want to take some of the responsibilities away from Ofcom. The people who work for Ofcom may be learning a thing or two now about what the EU is really all about.
