Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a set of techniques, axioms and beliefs that adherents use primarily as an approach to personal development. It is based on the idea that mind, body and language interact to create an individual's perception of the world and that perceptions, and hence behaviors, can be changed by the application of a variety of techniques.

The basic ideas of NLP were developed around 1973 by Richard Bandler, a student, and John Grinder, a professor of linguistics, in association with the social scientist Gregory Bateson. Although the underlying theoretical principles have not been supported by scientific research, a number of its techniques appear to have been based upon existing therapeutic techniques. The early focus of NLP was the study of the underlying patterns in the language and techniques of noted and successful therapists in hypnotherapy, gestalt therapy and family therapy. The patterns discovered were adapted for general communication and effecting change

NLP is applied mostly as a personal development system presented in group trainings, seminars, or individual client/practitioner consultations. It is also applied as a therapy in itself or as an adjunct by therapists in other disciplines. NLP practitioners deal with personal issues ranging from reframing negative beliefs, to dealing with stage fright and simple phobias, to self-help, depression, or addiction. More generally they deal with peak performance assistance in business or sports and communications and motivation. Professionals in other fields take up NLP as professional training for coaching, consulting, counseling and therapy (my connection - C_S)

NLP and its techniques have been widely adopted for use in motivational seminars, adult learning, and management and sales training, often being mixed with pop psychology and other applications outside of mainstream, like seduction.

NLP teaches that language and behaviors (whether functional or dysfunctional) are highly structured, and that this structure can be 'modeled' or copied into a reproducible form. Using NLP a person can 'model' the more successful parts of their own behavior in order to reproduce it in areas where they are less successful or 'model' another person to effect belief and behavior changes to improve functioning. If someone excels in some activity, it can be learned how specifically they do it by observing certain important details of their behavior. NLP embodies several techniques, including hypnotic techniques, which proponents claim can affect changes in the way people think, learn and communicate.

NLP You'll end up tapping your wrist as suggested by Paul Mckenna on GMtv a few months ago - that'll help

McKenna belongs to the 'Bandler school' of NLP, and is rather a showman on a particular narrow front of the body of NLP. But then again, what he does, works.

So how is NLP relevant to me?

I would have thought 'seduction' covered it quite adequatly, on the grounds that 'winning a girl over' without actually doing any seducing might just be a bit tricky - which could explain your results so far.....

seriously, better communciation and awareness is the actual answer.

Well, you obviously aren't that interested in this girl. No PMs in my inbox. Like I said, I'm an expert in such matters.

But don't bother now. The offer is closed.

A bit of confusion seems to reigning here. NLP is NLP as described by C Steam. The wrist tapping thing is a new form of therapy called EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique. It's very new and I don't know much about it. It allegedly works by tapping into the power of the bodies meridiens, the same channels of energy used in classical accupuncture. Google away, should you be curious, or go here http://www.emofree.com/

NLP has been around since the mid 1970s and in the hands of a competent practitioner is a very effective method of therapy. It does have it's critics, none of whom seem to be able to cure a phobia as effectively as a trained NLPer.

I have a practitioner certificate in NLP, and a diploma in Ericsonian Hypnotherapy, but I don't practice either in any theraputic setting. I would thoroughly recommened an NLP course for anyone. It was a real eye opener for me !

seconded. But choose your supplier carefully, NLP is an unregulated field and anyone after a relatively short time can set up as a 'trainer' of NLP.

(Zak - who did you train with?)

C Steam, sorry it took so long to reply.

I did an introduction to NLP with Pace Personal Developments in London in 1994. PPD was at that time run by a guy called Julian Russel. He was trained by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, when they were both still working together. Julian is a good NLP teacher in my estimation, but he can be a bit precious about it ! I don't know if PPD is still going, but I daresay Julian is still teaching somewhere.

In 1995 I did a full practitioner certificate with Change Works, up at Kennilworth, by Coventry. I was living in the midlands back then. The guy running it was a consultant psychiatrist named Dr Willy Montiero, he had worked on Richard Bandler's international training team for six years. His assistant was a guy called Brad (can't remember his surname) who had worked with Anthony Robbins for a few years. I found this a better organisation than PPD, but that's probably just me. Training with them was much more fun, and I felt I learnt far better.

In 1995 I did a diploma in Ericsonian hypnotherapy and NLP psychotherapy with British Hypnosis Research, in London. It was at that time run by a guy named Steve Brooks. I got half way through the course and decided I did not want to be a hypnotherapist, because I felt it would not suit me. Steve appeared to have no formal qualifications in NLP, a fact I did not know before I signed up for the course. He also treated some of his staff abysmally, by not paying them. This can all be taken as a bit of a warning to do your research before you embark on NLP training.

My advice would be find out if the trainers were trained by Bandler or Grinder, or their top trainers. Try and talk to people who have trained with the organisation in question. Of course Paul McKenna teaches NLP in London with Richard Bandler in London once or twice a year.

Other than the above caveat I would still recommend NLP. It made me far more aware of other peoples mental processes, as well as my own. The eye accessing clues are very useful. Sometimes you can tell if you are being lied to or not ! Some NLP exercises work really well. For example prior to NLP I bit my nails so badly they were often bloody or infected. By running a series or exercises known as the Swish I drasticaly reduced my nail biting. Now I almost never bite my nails on my little and ring fingers, except maybee to shorten them when they are in danger of becomming snagged. More often I will use a pair of nail scissors. My other nails I occasonaly bite, but never severely, more a slight chew rather than a bite. NLP also has some very good phobia cures. It can also be used to remove compulsions.
