Default Can condoms save Africa?

I was watching a report on Sky News, where these Africans were protesting against capitalism. I thought to myself capitalism is not causing their problems, its their inability to stop over-breeding and fighting eachother. So i thought, could the condom save Africa on the overbreeding, HIV/AIDS front?

I think it's part of the solution. They are in a vicious circle at the moment. If Bono and Geldof were really of any use, they would be demanding all money be spent on creating infrastructure for a section of people at a time to become 100% self suficient.

First on the poll. Yay!

*coughs*

I think the real problem is the lack of investment in the major, vital services of a nation: infrastructure, diversified industry, trade links and other such things.
Too many African nations concentrate on developing one particular resource in order to make money but too often don't have any backup plans in case the price falls; a far better idea, in the long-term, would be to invest in a little bit of everything.
Too often they have little money to do this anyway, admittedly, but that could be solved by more limited (rather than the huge sums that have rampant interest rates) and moral investment by foreign organisations.
With the development of a strong economy, everything else will follow.

A non corrupt government, a fair economy and a sense of patriotism would do a world of good.

I think it'd be best they practice abstinence for awhile to build up their cultures. A supply of condoms, of course. But that's still their choice to use them.

Exactly. Perhaps if they spent money on investing in infrastructure etc instead of on AK47s, they might be in a better position.

I don't reckon condoms alone would solve all of Africa's problems, but they would certainly save an awful lot of lives (as well as preventing other lives, of course). The AIDS rate in places like Uganda is truly dreadful.

Africans haven't only been protesting against capitalism. There were protests reported the other day outside the EU offices in Nairobi (I think it was), protesting against the poverty that EU trade policies are causing in Africa.

I think the two things go together. If they can get their economies rolling, there won't be so many folk with guns, grievances and too much spare time.
