The point of a petition is to try and stop it, instead of just bending over for the government and sitting back, watching it happen.

All these petitions will be ignored though. I mean, obviously, we should still sign up to them but don't think it will make any difference.

Again, not the point, at least we tried, and if they ignore after people have signed it, you can take further action - media etc, which you can't do if nobody bothers signing it!

I know that, I was arguing for your side

A lot of people believe - mistakenly, IMO - that these petitions will actually be delivered upon. They will not. They are, much like Pledgebank and other such e-petition and e-polls very worthwhile for the visual impact and assessing just how strong certain feelings run.

However, beyond this they have no power.
