Man of principle has died
On Christmas Day John Butcher, former Tory MP for Coventry South West, passed away with heart failure. He was 60 years old. I am privileged to have been one of his constituents and owe him a massive debt for the personal service he gave me in my time of need. He was a real gentleman.
John Butcher was 'one of us'. He was one of only 8 Tory MPs to vote against the Maastricht Treaty, for which he was condemned as a '*******' by John Major. Unlike so many europhiles he had read the treaty and was so appalled that he bought copies and offered them free to his constituents to read!
JB was a man of the people. His car in London was a Coventry built black cab. Once a month he could be found in the Earlsdon Cottage pub in his constituency playing jazz clarinet. He was an excellent constituency MP as I can attest from going to his surgery.
If all MPs had the principles of John Butcher we would still have our sovereignty.
RIP the best constituency MP.
