I say ******** to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century ways of looking at the World.

The question should be "Localist" or "Globalist"?
That's where the political - and real - battles of the Twenty-First Century are going to be fought.

I am not sure what you mean.

You can be localist, i.e. concerned with local issues and wanting to see local changes, and still have a globalist outlook, i.e. believe in international trade, taking a full role on the international stage etc.

I would say that UKIp falls into this position. The EU and its politicians are blinkered. They are inward looking and want to put up trade barriers. UKIP want to leave the EU and roll back the state in Britain (localist) but look out beyond the EU to the wider world with trade and cooperation (globalist)

Perhaps you could define localist and globalist a bit more

I also think there is a big difference between internationalism (free trade, free competition and co-operation between states) and supranationalism (control through transnational bureaucracies such as EU, ICC, UN). The problem with the term globalism is that it confuses the two.

I think that is deliberate.

However, if you are "localist", you have to accept *Protection* in the economy.
If you support global Free Trade, how do you prevent local producers from getting stuffed by international(ist) market forces?

This is UKIP's *worldview* paradox.

As for co-operation between states; there's nothing to beat bi-lateral arrangements and Treaties.

On your definition I would definitely not be localist as I oppose protection and support the free market nationally and internationally. I am not sure that is what Harry meant by localism in his comments though.

I consider the EU to be a protectionist and interventionist zone that has more similarities to an 'enlarged' nationalism than to any internationalist principles. After all, the EU is a state in the making.

So for the main question I support Classical Liberal/Libertarian principles. On the localist/globalist question I would hesitate to say globalist since I associate that with transnational bureaucracies but certainly I would support the traditional internationalism founded upon free nation states.
