EU is an ancient idea
The EU was actually an idea dreamt up by Spinelli and some eurofanatics on either side of the Rheinland area (i.e. the westernmost part of Germany and the French just over Germany's western border. The idea was to create the Frankish Empire of Charlemagne (or, to use the correct German name, Karl Der Grosser - Karl The Great).
Fortunately not all German people in or from the Rheinland believe in this nonsense. In any event, power has moved east since the Berlin Wall came down and, hopefully, Germany will grow back into its normal role of 'looking east' and not west to the graceless French.
If anyone is to blame for the 'idea' of today's EU - it is the Romans or/and those who created the Empire of Karl The Great. The EU is just a modern version of those previous failed empires. And the EU will fail too. The only question is how and when.
I've even heard europhiles interviewed on the continent (for documentaries shown on UK television) admitting that the EU is their way of trying to bring back the Empire of Karl The Great.
20th century politics did not invent the EU. The idea was there long before the last century even began  .
