Default Europe

Europe; A History. Norman Davies

A total history of all Europe in every period. This book is surprisingly comprehensive. It covers the political evolution of Europe throughout history, including the now forgotten states (Livonia, Aragon, Bohemia, Navarre, Smolensk etc) and forgotten atrocities (the noyades, Stalin's famine).

I tend to disagree with Davies's opinions (he is a europhile), but his book is full of interesting stuff. For example it includes the best summaries of totalitarianism and propaganda that I have found. A real education.

Default long shadow

Inside the Third Reich. Albert Speer

More than sixty years after its demise, Sinn Fein's old ally - the Third Reich, continues to influence British politicians (and broadcasters). For example, Ken Livingstone doesn't feel that his day is complete until he has compared somebody to a Nazi. This just shows the man's crass ignorance.

This book is, in my opinion, the best on the subject, not because it goes into much detail of what the Nazis got up to, but because it gives an insight into the mindset of the men responsible. It is amazing to think that the events portrayed are still within living memory.

Voodoo Science: The Road from Foolishness to Fraud

Quote:
"Scientific error", says Robert Park, "has a way of evolving... from self-delusion to fraud. I use the term voodoo science to cover them all: pathological science, junk science, pseudoscience, and fraudulent science." In pathological science, scientists fool themselves. Junk science is when scientists use their expertise to befuddle and mislead others (usually juries or lawmakers). Pseudoscience has the trappings of science without any evidence. Fraud is, well, fraud--old-fashioned lying.
Park is well-acquainted with voodoo science in all its incarnations. Since 1982 he has headed the Washington, DC office of the American Physical Society, and he has carried the flag for scientific rationality through cold fusion, homeopathy, "Star Wars," quantum healing, and sundry attempts to repeal the laws of thermodynamics. Park shows why "a disproportionate share of the science seen by the public is flawed" (because shaky science is more likely to skip past peer review and head straight for the media), and gives a good tour of recent highlights in Voodoo. He has a rare ability to poke holes compassionately, without heaping vitriol on those taken in by their fondest wishes. He is less forgiving of scientists when he thinks they've fallen down on the job, which should include helping the public separate the scientific wheat from the voodoo chaff. --Mary Ellen Curtin --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

There is one particular science I found this guy had the number of!

Not a suggested reading as such because I haven't read it. But still maybe of interest to some forum members.

Book Description
Who Owns the World is the first ever compilation of landowners
and landownership structures in every single one of the world's 191 states
and 41 territories. The book is divided into two parts: the first covers
the history of landownership as far as written history will allow, while
the second shows the division of landownership in every region of the
world.
Packed with revelatory information, the book:
* identifies the person who owns the largest proportion of the world's land
and documents their landholdings;
* provides details of the next 50 top landowners and lists the next 1,000
thereafter;
* reveals the 100 most prominent aristocratic families who own over 60 per
cent of Europe's land mass and who receive most of the EC's agricultural
subsidy allowance;
* documents the vast landholdings of the four largest religious groups: the
Catholic Church and the other Christian churches, the Islamic trusts and
the temple possessions of the Hindus and Buddhists;
* details in a special individual section the lands owned by the British
Commonwealth;
* contains a complete survey of the historic record of landownership,
starting in Mesopotamia/Iraq in 8,000 BC;
* lists many of the world's great Domesdays, going back to the earliest in
Ptolemaic Egypt; and
* includes an analysis of the legal structures that have reduced 95 per
cent of the earth's population to serfdom.

Who Owns the World is a breathtaking tome of huge political, economic and
social importance. It is set to revolutionise our understanding of our
planet, its history and its land.
My brief persual didn't quite back up that description but I only really looked at the individual nation section rather than the more general section.

Default Reading matter

The mst comprehensive list of euro-sceptic titles I've encountered is the publication list of June Press (Devon/Cornwall).

As for The Great Deception, I recommended it to a pal wo who making all the right sort of enquiries. He bought it the next day, and a week later said - Thank you, I've read it, and I'm angry, very angry.

Don't forget the somewhat early but very readable The Ratchet, by John Rennie Stewardson.

I saw that as soon as I did it.
For some reason I couldn't delete it.
I'm surprised that it took this long for somebody to comment.
