The youth of today respond to peer pressure, that peer pressure includes the threat or perception of the threat of violence. If transgressions were responded to in a like fashion most youth crime would disappear. The threat of violence from a gang holds more sway than a policeman or teacher who is not allowed to physically repremand a youth, the group which has the most influence is pretty obvious. If the police and magistrates were allowed to administer the only punishment that today's youth responds to then I think we would have cracked the problem. Maybe there should be an upper age limit on corporal punishment, say, 22.

Why an upper age limit?

An upper age limit? When children and youths become adults, anything which is designed to shape behaviour is going to work on them. For those who are older then I am afraid that only taking them away from society will be of any use.

I was thinking of corporal punishment in prison, then you wouldn't end up with criminals in prison being given treats for good behavior. I want prison life to be so harsh that it is feared by the criminal, might make them think twice before committing crimes at a future date!
