The ancient Egytians invented earliest mechanical clocks. A variety of mechanical clocks were produced by Spanish Muslim engineers, both large and small, and this knowledge was transmitted to Europe through Latin translations of Islamic books on mechanics. These clocks were weight-driven. Designs and illustrations of epi-cyclic and segmental gears were provided. One such clock included a mercury escapement. The latter type was directly copied by Europeans during the 15th century. In addition, during the 9th century, Ibn Firnas of Islamic Spain, according to Will Durant, invented a watch-like device which kept accurate time. The Muslims also constructed a variety of highly accurate astronomical clocks for use in their observatories. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clock The person who first developed a rotor, however, was Abraham-Louis Perrelet (1729-1826), one of Switzerland's greatest watchmakers. Perrelet is considered the father of the automatic watch. http://www.europastar.com/europastar...p#anchor120455 The Chinese invented gunpowder The Chinese invented the Mariner's compass The Celts invented soap The Chinese invented paper and the Egyptians invenetd papyrus scolls See the following link for more Chinese inventions: http://www.crystalinks.com/chinainventions.html The Chinese also invented silk weaving, but the Celts and other races found mummified in ther western Chinese desert possessed woven cloth, I think of wool, and woven as plaid that seems to predate this. Several reference books and websites attribute the very first windmills to the ancient Persians, although this is "accepted knowledge" and not really proven. The attribution was based on the first recorded description of a windmill by Hero of Alexandria, around the 1st century AD. The knowledge of harnessing the wind is thought to have travelled, along with the crusades, INTO phpbb_Europe. http://www2.rnw.nl/rnw/en/features/d...?view=Standard Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Islamic astronomy is the fact that it built on the sciences of two great cultures, the Greek and the Indian. http://physics.unr.edu/grad/welser/astro/arab.html Glass is thought to have been first created around 3000 BC, during the bronze age. Egyptian glass beads date back to about 2500 BC. Modern glass originated in Alexandria during the Ptolemaic period, artisans created "mosaic glass" in which slices of colored glass were used to create decorative patterns. Glassblowing was invented during the 1st century BC by the glassmakers of Syria. During the 15th century in Venice, the first clear glass called cristallo was invented and then heavily exported. In 1675, glassmaker George Ravenscroft invented lead crystal glass by adding lead oxide to Venetian glass. http://inventors.about.com/library/i...bleyeglass.htm |

Cyburn, the important thing for people to realise and remember is that all science and technology originated in pagan societies. The first thinkers and inventors the world over were neither Christian nor Muslim. If you are a Parsi then Hiya from me a steppe nomad from the people who venerated the sun, like yours. That gives us a lot in common. It can rebuild bridges where bridges have been broken down. Once our people traded and knew one another in a different way. This can be so again. The reason why the Vikings began to raid the monastries of Europe was because these trade links were being usurped. They are opening once again. If you look at the South African/Arab collaboration of the new A1 World Cup of Motorsport you will see this in action. And it's heavily nationalist and sponsored by an Arab. There are increasing new links between east and west and north and south. The new millennium has yet to happen, but it's on its way ...
