New restrictions on central heating - Are these from the EU?
For any of you who are planning on buying a new boiler in the near future I have some bad news. As of january 1st a new law comes INTO phpbb_effect that makes it illegal to sell or fit any boiler except a condensing boiler. Additionally when a boiler has been fitted or replaced it will have to be inspected by a local govermnet official to ensure it has been fitted correctly. Anyone who has knowledge or experience of condensing boilers knows they are far less relaiable and far more prone to failure nad need for repair than older forms of boilers. They also cost a hell of a lot more. I have been made aware of this via a note from our local branch of Jackson Shipley who suppply materials to the building trade. They give no indication of the origins of the law, simply announce that these are the new regulations which they and everyone else will have to comply with. |

Once again, its the government messing with the building regs, this time part L not part P. Claims to be because of the need to reduce CO2 emmissions - i.e Kyoto.
However, don't be fooled. EU directive 2002/91/EC (the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive - EPBD) is written as its name suggests, to increase improvements in the energy performance of buildings and will have to become UK law by Jan '06, unless the Govt applies for an extension. Quote:
But its the thin end of the wedge. You'll need an expensive inspection when you sell your house (D above - linked INTO phpbb_some kind of homebuyers pack) and more stringent requirements will be made for insulation standards, double glazing, airtightness, conservatories and so on. |
