WHERE HAS IT ALL GONE?
Gallons, feet & inches, pounds & ounces, miles and The British/English way of life. My car still does miles to the gallon but I cannot buy a gallon of fuel anywhere. My shoe size is still 8 but can you find a shoe with the correct size printed inside. My tape measure reads feet and inches but can you find a piece of wood that measures 4 inches by 2 inches. Or a board 8' x 4'. Soon you will be in the pub and when you ask for a pint of beer you will be told, Sorry no more pints served here only half litres. They never asked if I wanted to be a citizen of the European union, if they had the answer would be....... .........................NO!!!!!!! |

yeah... and those good old days when we used to trade in Goats and paint ourselves Blue..... oh the memories.
- but then the world moves forwards and so should we...... I dont see it as being 'unpatriotic' to upgrade measurments to a more logical system.... I dont believe doing un-necessarily complex calculations are required for a British way of life! - I mean, how many inches in a foot, how many feet in a yard & how many of them in a mile? Be damned if I know? then try calculating between them and then ever wonder why no-one below the age of 60 bothers with Imperial measurements? This greatest people from our small island were those who stood tall for logic, science and innovation whereas I think UKIP Man still would probably swear blind the world is flat! |

You get used to the system you grow up with, hence I am used to dealing with decimal currency. A lot of businesses are used to dealing in imperial weights and measures still. The reason for this is all their machines and equipment are designed with this in mind and their workers are trained to use them.
I am all for progression if there is a real benefit, but this progression should not be forced on people for political benefit. Taking people to court because they want to sell a pound of fruit is outrageous. Who exactly are they harming by doing this? I weigh myself in pounds and stones still and find it simple. What benefit is there for me switching to kg? Nothing is the real answer. Decimal is only more simple to people who are used to dealing in decimal. What are the real benefits that switching to that system have brought us? A lot of cost, for not much benefit as far as I can tell. Computers are becoming all important now, should we switch to binary? No don't answer that, it will probably become a EU/Borg directive. You will be assimilitaed, resistance is futile!

MKP -
you're somewhat right in saying we use what we're used - at uni they still teach languages which, at best, is about 4 years out of date! (a lifetime in computer terms).... but in the modern world it does us no favours to refuse to update! - we dont teach ourselves the latest technologies the job will go to someone who has! there's simply no benefits to being out of date! If this boards 'old school' had their way we'd be bringing a whole plethra of changes in to our lives simple because 'they did it before they starting withdrawing their pensions'! Kids would be taught the stupid illogical system of inches, yards, oz and chains simply because they cant be arsed to move forward from the dark ages! - The world UKIP man used to live in a child is gone and is never coming back. He should stop trying to hold us back as a country and simple spend 5 minutes learning the new system! |

I agree, as long as there is a good reason for switching to the new system. Otherwise we should question it until we are blue in the face!

I used t' wak doon t' streeet, mad uf cubles cheing me licrish aye un mud on me knees aye what a life eh!!! My car goes fast it does 160 KPH, wow at least if you were to say a ton you know how fast you are going you dont have to divide and then multiply subtract and then add for good measure.. When I use my tape measure I take it to the nearest line that's on the tape, so that works both ways. But if you were bragging, you don't say "I've got 2,000.000mm" do you it don't sound right. The time that UKIP MAN lived as a child wasn't that long ago, cos I aint that old, well I have found the Elixir of youth, I would let you have the recipe but its written in lbs & ozs and maybe you would not be able to work it out.. Ps, my arms don't half ache pulling on this here rope!!! And if it only takes five minutes to learn, I think you had better tell the world about this fantastic school. |

My friend - you need not a school since I shall teach you the logics behind metric.
There's 3 different units, one for length, one for weight and one for volume. These are meters (or m), grammes (or g) and litres (l). Lets look at length; the meter. a thousand meters are in a kilometer (km) (since a kilo = a thousand in french) a hundredth of a meter is a centimenter (centi = 100th in french) a thousand of a meter is a millimeter (milli = 1000th in french). Everything is divisible by 10 and works exactly in volume and weight as is does in length. so.... for example if I were say a peice of wood is 40cm by 20 we'd all know instantly that it is..... yes you've guest it..... 0.4m by 0.2! I dont see why you blame the EU for this anyhow.... my history books tell me it was back in 1965 that Metric was added to British law whereas we joined the EU in 1973. - if you have a spare few minutes please read http://www.ukma.org.uk/why/myths.htm sorry for the sarcasm easrlier in my post.... It's been one of those days ![]() |

You all miss the point:
What is wrong with a duel system, one will die of natruel causes, we had this before it was decided by europe, that it was against the law and rubber stamped by our quisling Government. Remember this quote from former eu commissioner Mrtin Bangeman " Britains understanding of pounds and ounces gives the country an unfair advantage in trade with the USA". Dave |

It measures 100mm x 600mm x 10 metres. Divide it INTO phpbb_32 equal lengths please. I reckon it will take you far longer to sort that out than it would be to make the same division if the piece of timber was ten yards long. The metric system is limited to tenths - the imperial system has no such limitation and is therefore far more flexible. Keep both systems I say - each have their uses and each have their limitations. |
