Fact The British Government Considered Monmouthshire to be an English County until 1974.
1/ The 1888 Local Government Act
2/ Ordanance Survey Maps published up until 1974
3/ Entries in the Encyclopedia Britanica.
4/ Finally if it was not an English County in 1972, why did the 1972 Local Govt, specifically change the status of Monmouthshire (Gwent) from English to Welsh ?
Now it maybe that Welsh Nationalists believe that the British Govt was wrong, but there is absolutely no doubt for the majority of the last Century Monmouthshire was considered to be an English County by the British Government.
