The economy had to change from an unproductive manufacturing base to a service based economy, industrys had to be sold off to repay debt after we had to go cap in hand to the IMF, the top rate of tax was 98% 60% tax was the norm.
The present crisis was caused by another Labour government failing to save when it had the chance.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Gen 1:1
The economy has become much more globalised since the advent of cheap air freight and greater choice of shipping, countries and the growth of consumerism since the 1960's. The economy did NOT have to change from a manufacturing-based economy to a service-based economy, however the advent of globalisation has meant that goods can be sourced at lower costs from certain countries.
Relying on other countries for most of the goods that can be produced in this country means that fluctuations in exhange rates, foreign government legislation, foreign taxation etc all affect the products that we purchase. We cannot manufacture our way out of recessions, or produce the goods that we need. The skilled people who could manufacture these goods go to other more favourable countries to manufacture their goods.
This economy is built on credit. Get a credit card and buy the latest fad. Get a store card and purchase a new fridge/cooker/expensive do da. Get finance and buy a new car. Get a mortgage and pay over the odds for a house that really isn't worth it.
On your last point, you will find that it does not matter which Party was in power during the recent banking crisis. The big three (aka the Oligarchy Party) has always been there to represent Big Business. They pull the strings. Not Darling, Cable or Osbourne. Just the same puppeteers, with different strings.

The Socialists are now contesting all three seats in Coventry. They are also standing for all 18 council seats. It will be very interesting to see what vote they get.
Quite shocked how badly Nellist did here.
