The 393 political parties listed by the Electoral Commission, as of today, can be found here:-

Party Finance - The Electoral Commission : Regulatory issues : Political parties : Registers : Register of political parties

A number appear to be pro-Democracy parties.

If you think about it they must all believe in the principle of Democracy, in its current form at least, or why would they bother to register with ElComm?

It suggests that there is scope for getting people from many disparate groups under one roof for the cause of democracy itself as defined in 1902 (Nuttall's Standard Dictionary):-
"A form of government in which the supreme power is directly or indirectly lodged in the hands of the people."

Even in Parish & Town Councils supreme power is lodged through indirect democracy (representative democracy) and Direct Democracy (referendum) is rare. Even when used it is subject to unfair competition with the Government and its agencies & associates usually spending more money and time (media) on their preferred choice.e.g. UK 1975 referendum on the EEC.

The first Irish Lisbon Treaty referendum was a rare win for the opposition, and having travelled to Ireland on holiday on voting day (purely an accidental coincidence because we booked the ferry months before the referendum was announced), I revelled in the aftermath. The Irish Government and media was in apoplexy - something to savour - and the coverage was like drinking free, rare wine. Delicious!

    Richard,

Very kind of you to say so. It was a wrench to leave but I feel that in hindsight it was a wise decision. My good friend Mike Bridgeman took over as Chairman of Devizes branch and was the Wiltshire rep on the SW Counties Regional Committee. I believe that he also has resigned as a result of the General Election debacle with Lord Pearson, the Party Leader, urging voters not to vote UKIP.

Following a few months R&R after continuous flat-out campaigning since 2003 I am now ready to try to bring together the whole body of people opposed to the EU. I promised to do that during the leadership election and that is still my aim.

I do not understand why the anti-democratic Communists who have no MPs, MEP's or local councillors and tiny parties such as the New Party are included, but the National Front is excluded from this 'Democracy' forum. Why the discrimination?
The NF is a democratic party formed in 1967, and its Chairman and National Directorate are elected at an Annual General Meeting by a vote of Party members. It regularly contests local and parliamentary elections with moderately successful results and is committed to achieving power by the ballot box.
The NF seems to be undergoing a revival with 40 local branches in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The NF now has 1000 members and has benefited recently from an influx of disillusioned former BNP members.
I do not agree with all the NF's policies but I sympathise with their opposition to mass immigration, political correctness and the bloody no win war in Afghanistan.
The inclusion of the NF would stimulate lively and interesting debate.

The NF recently won 2 local council seats and elected Simon Deacon and John Gamble as councillors.

When they get MEPs or MPs, we will consider it.
