Should we end government funding of state schools?

English education includes many schools linked to the Church of England which sets the ethos of the school and can influence selection of pupils where there is competition for places. These form a large proportion of the 6,955 Christian faith schools in England. The Roman Catholic church also maintains schools. In addition, there are 36 Jewish, 7 Muslim, 2 Sikh and 1 Hindu[1] (under construction) faith schools. Faith schools follow the same national curriculum as state schools. Religious education in Church of England schools is monitored by the local diocese, but does not typically take up much more of the timetable than in secular schools.

No. I think that it is important that children get the best education that they can and I fear that people with limited disposable incomes would not pay for their child's education even if they could afford it.

What I do think though is that people who educate their children outside of the state system, should be allowed to pay for it from untaxed income.

    Messed this one up.
Thread should be faith schools not state schools.
Could one of the mods change it please?

I don't think the government should fund faith schools.
In fact, I don't think religious education has any place in schools.

It's not the first thing I would address, but in the long term, yes.

It cannot be wise to allow the belief in the existence of the supernatural to be taught anywhere let alone to vulnerable young minds, reason and superstition are mutually exclusive.

Religion should be treated in law like any other fan club.

The basis of a good education systems should centre arround parental choice, if there is enough demand for a faith school in an area then there should be one.

Equally a school should be judged on its results.

Religion Education in some form will have to be taught in all schools as it is entwined in our History and our culture.

As a Christain I pay taxes to fund non faith schools, I think that where demand is present for faith schools people not of my faith should contribute torwards them.

We certainly need to bring back the morality and work ethic which was the backbone of this country a century ago. Since then we have had the "hippy" culture of disrespect, confrontation and promiscuity and something along that line led us into the moral mess we are in now.

If children do not get taught morality at home because their parents don't understand it, who is going to give them the means to survive emotionally and the building bricks to contribute to the society they live in and respect the rules for it to continue?

If those bankers and hedge fund managers had a grain of "conscience" they would not have risked their own country in pursuit of personal wealth. This aspect of the economic meltdown is the most shocking, and we still do not know the extent of the moral poverty in our government.

Our children are our future and we owe it to them to find out why we are so morally bankrupt in this country now.
