    Default Plants

A neighbour gave us a couple of pretty plants.
We know not what they are nor what care they need. Just that they are indoor plants.

Can anyone here help identify them from the pictures below? Any helpful information would be appreciated.

That's one of those green leafy pants with an orange bit in the middle (plant enthusiast's technical jargon).

Water them around twice a week and you're as good a green fingered fool in the garden of unknown greenery.

It's a Bromeliad - the pineapple is the best known member of the family.

Looks like it rejoices in the name of 'Red Bromeliad'...

    Thank you kindly sharp shark.
I'll pass that on to the missus.

It is indeed some sort of bromiliad, but from the look of things, it's crying out for something more than a 4" pot to grow in.

If it were mine, I'd be giving it a nice 8" pot (or larger), a south-western exposure and, twice-weekly, a thorough watering.

Why do some plants thrive on being pot-bound, whereas others would suffer?

The pots are what the plants came in. They will be re-potted.

Beautiful bromeliad you have there, Besoeker. We have some too, the one in the pic may be indigeneous in our case. It was dug up in KwaZulu/Natal and given to us by a travelling pharmacist. It's battling a bit where we are because the frost is harsh and it's freezing in winter. It did ping out a bloom, though.

    Thanks DD.
The lady who gave it to us lives a few doors away and isn't very well so my missus has been doing a bit of cooking for her.
The plants were to show her thanks for that. Her mother dropped them in but there was no label to tell us what they were so the help from here is greatly appreciated.
