A number of people have contacted me privately about this thread. I would like to make a slight correction. Although Ashley Mote had dragged out the case until after his 70th birthday to avoid, I believe, a sentence of greater than 12 months, it transpires, from someone present in court, that the discussion at sentencing was about the fact that the prisons were overcrowded. Ashley Mote, therefore, I now understand, received a sentence that was less than the tariff for someone in his position committing fraud and theft because the prisons were full. It is a sad indictment of our system that serious fraudsters should get reduced sentences because of the state of our prisons. Ashley Mote was able, therefore, to receive a substantial salary whilst in prison and to receive an enhanced pension based on his length of service as a MEP which included that time when he was as effective as a chocolate teapot.

Had Ashley Mote been a gentleman he would, in his beloved cricket parlance, have 'walked' and resigned the seat he had won by default. UKIP would not have retained his name on the list of candidates had they known he was being investigated for fraud. I have spoken to a number of people who dealt with Ashley Mote's candidature and he wilfully failed to declare the fact that he was in serious trouble with the authorities. Isn't it sad that a man, who would feign patriotism and claim to support law and order, defrauded the party that gave him succour and support and whose members worked hard for his election?

Patriotism truly is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

Ford Prison is a holiday camp as well. Apparently you can even play golf while you are there. It is known to be one of the best prisons in the country.

I'm told Mote criticised the food. He also gave a lecture on the EU whilst he was there!

Despite all that is known about the despicable shameless ex-con he is still favoured by the likes of GLW.
Is this because old lags stick together ?

Apparently Ford Prison is where they put all the bent and wayward ruling aristocracy. Jeffrey Archer was another of the alumni of the institution. I expect you would learn more about politics in three months in that place than a normal person would gain in a lifetime.

Baron von Lotsov: Are you sure that Jeffrey Archer was one of their residents? Several hereditary peers have been sent to the Eton of the prison system, but Archer is only a Life peer, and I do hope that is wasn't done just to embarrass the poor fellow. Perhaps some jocular left-winger was behind it; they like their bit of fun, eh BvL! Still have my doubts though; oil and water, that kind of thing; Archer in Ford, lacks that ring of truth somehow.

I'm pretty sure. I did a little checking before posting it to check if I had remembered correctly.

    Herr Baron,
Geoffrey Archer was imprisoned in Lincoln jail.
He was photographed along with a prison officer enjoying the delights of that city. The press had a field day over that one.

Baron von Lotsov: The man is an imposter. He was a Belmarsh prison. Wayland. Norfolk, North Sea Camp .Lincoln, Hollesley Bay. He claims to have gone to Wellington College, when he didn't; Oxford University, when he didn't; and now he claims to have been to the Eton of the penal system when he hadn't. This is not good enough BvL. Hereditary peers were sent to Ford. George Best was at Ford, as was Ernest Saunders. I'm afraid life peers are not welcome in such places. One hereditary peer complained that Ford is full of the worst council-house type these days. I can see what he means. Improve your research young man.

Mote's prison experience was limited in comparison to Lord Archer. Mote's first days were spent in Winchester Prison, a splendid Victorian institution with a great history. Ford is like a modern comprehensive in style compared to the wonders of Winchester.

The prison has seen the hangman's noose on occasion and was used in Kubrick's film A Clockwork Orange. Ford is nothing in comparison. Lucky old fraudster Ashley Mote being incarcerated in one of Britain's great penal institutions.
