I thought they had. At what point in the next 1,000 years will they be able to live guilt free?

When they have a government that repeals certain laws, that would allow free speech. Also, when they can look back upon their entire history with honour and with pride.

I was on holiday once in southern Poland, and on one particular day I had the choice of visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine or Auschwitz. I chose the salt mine. I just thought the alternative was a morbid way to spend time on. Plus I knew more about that than the salt mine.

Or is that even necessary? For example, I don't look with pride on our invasion of Iraq, but at the same time I'm not accepting guilt for it.

I experienced a similar choice of venue on a holiday in Bavaria in 1973. It was during the Oktoberfest and the choice was Dachau or the Obersalzberg, along with Berchtesgaden and Salzberg, itself.. I chose the latter unhesitatingly and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Nazi death camps are to be avoided at all costs.

Yep. Done that too, but not Dachau.

I appreciate that. All wars are unnecessary and can be avoided. But the heroism of many can not be dismissed.

The invasion of Iraq was illegal and those responsible for it are war criminals. However, the ordinary soldier is but a pawn in power politics.

Overall, the history of Europe is replete with great achievements in terms of art, music, science and literature. War is a rude interruption in that long process of achievement ... of which we can all share in the pride.

I've done both and came away the better-informed by both experiences.

Why not read a book, instead? You learn just as much.

I don't go on holiday to 'learn'. I go on holiday to relax.
