The Social Democratic Party prides its self on the practical solutions produced by it`s predominantly working people members. Whilst we are in the process of revisiting policies produced in what are termed the "Glory Days" and bringing them into line with 21st century thinking and practise. In some area`s the old ways are without doubt the best and this is one of those. Whilst we have not fully formulated health policies at present. There is no doubt in this scribes mind ( formerly a National Union of Public Employees shop steward at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Birmingham) that going back to Ward Sisters & Matrons would help improve overall efficiency in patient care.

Regarding the second question. As a former locomotive fireman on the Midland Region of B.R. I am personaly an avid suporter of moving freight off the roads and onto rail. You see, in the SDP we look for practical common sense solutions to issues. Common sense would dictate that with the high price of diesel fuel it is far more efficient to have one locomotive hauling 30/40 wagons taking a similar number of lorries off the road.
Haulage costs would be reduced and not only would reduced haulage costs enable reduced or stabilised consumer prices. But look at the environmental benefits regarding carbon emmissions, not to mention freeing up our roads. there would need to be an improved railway operating structure in place, preferably one operating company. To this end the SDP would seek not to renew private operators franchises as they come up for renewal.
