Default Is Greece about to leave the €uro?...

Greece's latest woes have raised something that was previously unthinkable - the possibility of the Greek people rejecting the euro.

For the first time, the subject of a country leaving the eurozone has been raised at the highest levels of the 27-member European Union

Greece exiting the failing euro would be a great move by them as they could immediately set their own prices and currency rates and others would follow I'm sure.

Whether the Greek people reject the euro isn't really the issue. The point is whether they will be forced out of the euro by other members due to their unwillingness to live up to the terms for the bail out.

If Greece exits the Euro, and fails in reconstructing her economy, that will be seen as a warning to the others. If however she succeeds, that will be an example for the others. That will be the ECB's greatest fear. Greece could/will hold-on for a few more weeks; the game will be played right up to the wire.

According to the Guardian, some financial institution in London is currently rating the probability of Greece leaving the euro as being 50-75%. In other words they think it is more likely than not.

Sorry I can't find the link.

What is the bigger problem - Greece or France? The Germans didn't waste much time trying to slap down Hollande. The EU could probably survive without Greece, but France being "uncooperative" (ie towing the German line) is another matter.

As for the markets, the Euro is still holding up OK, albeit at 52 week lows.

Oh yes, we hold great hopes that France and Greece between them might just be able to bring the Euro down, and criipple the German plan for the United States of Greater Germany once and for all

Whatever the price we pay for that will be well worth paying to finally get rid of the Evil Empire

I read the same in City AM this morning.

Things not looking good. I wish they'd just hurry up and work out how they are going to go back to the Drachma because it's quite clear things are not going to change and there is clearly no point in carrying this on.

Do you think the Eurocrats could or would deliberately make things hard for Greece for the very reasons you've suggested?

If Greece pulls out of the Euro .. this will surely focus the minds of the Greeks. And if they can kick-start a recovery they may even leave the EU altogether. It just takes one to show how it can be done. The EU needs pulling back down to the EEC model, as it was sold to begin with.
