Default Chinese to dump solar power

So, they are using cheap energy and we are supposed to compete commercially with them using really cheap power such as windmills and solar.
Temperatures may go down as well as up terms and conditions apply.

Manufacturers of photo-voltaic (i.e. solar) panels are up in arms in the USA, because there is a massive rush to fit them there, but they are being forced out of business by cheap Chinese imports. Should've invested in selenium a few years ago

Anyway, looks like the Chinese are taking throrium fission seriously. I wish we were.

I don't pretend to know anything about 'throrium fission' but the link was interesting...

Does anyone know why uranium can't be used in molten salt reactor? It melts at 1100C, thorium at 1700C. It's the molten liquid that seems to be the safety method if overheating happens, as it just flows away.

You could use a molten metal reactor if you wanted, it would be risky and most of it's components would be ceramic and very high temperature alloys.
The problem with nuclear reactors is that if things get out of control or if the cooling system is knocked out the core will melt, it will melt even if the reactor is shut down, this is due to the massive amount of heat liberated by the intense radioactive decay and it needs to be removed.

When conventional reactors melt the consequences depend upon what sort of reactor it is, if it is water cooled like an AGR then the water and molten fuel will meet and result in a gigantic explosion that ruptures containment and spews a radioactive cloud into the atmosphere.
There was a design of ball reactor that the Germans used, this used ceramic fuel and ceramic reactor parts these would not melt in the event of a coolant failure.

    I do but it's a secret so I can't tell you.

Isn't the idea that thorium is extremely widely available and fairly safe where as Uranium isn't either.
