I now have even more of an enjoyable life, thanks to the smoking ban. I'm hoping it will soon be banned in all public spaces, covered or not.

Thankyou for making my point clear, and that this doesn't really have anything to do with health concerns for non-smokers. You get enjoyment out of attacking libertarian values, whether it effects you or not. When all smoking is banned, what else will you do? Attack drinking, sex and possibly chips?

It's the attitude of the typical official. They see someone enjoying themselves and they think, we would enjoy banning them. It's the petty-minded spite that comes about because they have hideously boring lives and only feel good it they can bring everyone else down to their level.

I have seen it in my own town. We had a great place to go to before officials discovered that people were enjoying themselves too much. First they imposed a sound limit lower than the passing traffic, then they decided it needed not one but two fire exits, then they reasoned that it must have a disabled lift into it, that it shouldn’t have a late licence and that it needed official security approved by their people to police it, and finally the smoking ban came in.

A Bob Hope joke - I don't have a problem with legalising homosexuality. I'm just worried about when they decide to make it compulsory.

Smoking and sex should undertaken in private. Though you can get paying audiences for the latter.

Drinking is a particular problem for many people with northern European roots – as any Thursday, Friday, Saturday, night in UK city centres will show.

This will be a shame for the vast majority of people who can handle and enjoy alcohol. Restrictions are bound to be reintroduced after the failed experiment in relaxing them. All because a significant majority lack self control.

But you are wrong about my motives towards smoking. I have disliked second-hand tobacco (smell and smoke) for as long as I can remember. And since its effects have been known for 50 years, I question the intelligence of anyone younger than 60 who still smokes.

For those who like a drink but don't smoke and think the smoking ban is not a problem, well I have news for you.

What happened to dealing with the real problems that are affecting the economy?
Don't get me wrong, when my daughter was in hospital for another reason, there were alcoholics in her ward, they were really nice people from different backgrounds, if anything these people could warn other people how it had destroyed their lives, they are the people after all, that could tell youngsters of the dangers and their experiences.
    Why Attack?

Unfortunately I can't see the UK returning to that style of policing.

There is far too much concern about the individual's human rights and not enough about sorting out the riff raff.

I think it is obvious that the Republicans in the USA were very chummy with the illiberal ideologies of Islam, so maybe this requires a more indepth look, instead of regarding people as riff raff.

Rioters, drunks and a large number of "protesters" are just Riff Raff.

Many years ago the police wouldn't hesitate to use truncheons liberally to clear them off the streets. It would be good to see that style of policing return to this country but sadly I doubt it will happen.
