Good list Robin, there's a few there I don't think I have seen, so I will look out for them.

I like 'First of the Few' about the development of the Spitfire. R J Mitchell, the designer was originally from Staffordshire but used to live a few streets from where I grew up in Southampton, so its has a bit of a personal connection for me.

Ah, now, if you're an RJ Mitchell fan, then you'd probably like the book by Jonathan Glancey, titled 'Spitfire'.

Hoggy, I'll look up the book. A decent book for me has to be at least 600 pages, with hundreds of charts, diagrams and statistics.

Best war film is Cross of Iron.
Saving Private Ryans battle scene was excellent mind you.
From the people who fought in it that I know they said that was the most realistic for warfare.

Please don't post a link for Who Dares Wins- I can see that one coming!
Indeed LOL! One of the most heavily derided films of it's day. And Richard Widmark in it, an' all !

The recruitment scene in Wild Geese was a peach, such well drawn characters, and a nice breezy script.

Wouldn't there be so much less "ART" in the world if we humans didn't have a penchant for slaughtering each other at the drop of a hat so to speak. War films, pictures, novels, murder mysteries, gory horror films, histories, documentaries and so on. Why are we so fixated about death after all it is the equal first in the it happens to us all category along with birth and there's not as much "ART" about that, is there?

Tora! Tora! Tora! and The Sands of Iwo Jima are both worth a watch. Surprised no one has mentioned Bridge On the River Kwai or Ice Cold In Alex!!!

As for sweating out the booze, I would have been with them, there is nothing like smacking a bottle of whisky, hard drinking and hard living is the lifestyle.
And at the time Burton was also fighting off Martian invaders with the help of some Prog rock disco music.

Miss those big characters. Russel Crowe doesn't quite cut it as a classic hellraiser.

I'll shall give Wild Geese another look it sounds better than I remember it.
