Default Peter Oborne on BBC2 Newsnight

This will probably go down as one of my favourite moments in television history.

Discussing the euro crisis, they had Johanna Kyrkland on from Schroder, some fool from the EU, and Sir Richard Lambert (a pro-EU fool), chaired by Paxo.

He was fantastically bellicose and confrontational in the face of such drivel. He seemed a little "tired and emotional", but I thought his anger was wholly justified.

    A must watch on iPlayer.

Yes I saw it and his anger was justified but unfortunately his argument was entirely ignored. If he had put it eloquently it was pretty clear Paxo would have been behind him all the way. At least he had a bit of fun, but no more was achieved.

Would you like a link for that, for the benefit of all those who refuse to pay their BBC licence fee?

    Richard North comments on this:

    EU Referendum: Not impressed

"This is a political construction … this is a political project" says the EU commission representative. Cut to Peter Oborne delivering extruded verbal material. I don't know why so many people believe this was a bravura performance as he dismisses the claim that the euro is a political project - which it is - and pontificates about economics … about which he knows little.

Oborne is staking his reputation on the "guilty men" meme, but the comparisons are not appropriate, and the man is now coming over as a loud-mouthed bore. I'll say it again – the real guilty men were and are the journalists like James Kirkup, Fraser Nelson and, yes, Peter Oborne - who kept EU issues out of the media, and played along with Cameron who sought to suppress discussion on the EU.

Oborne now lauds the Tory politicians who spoke against the euro – mentioning Hague on this programme – omitting to say that this man was the progenitor of "in Europe but not ruled by Europe". None of these Tories opposed the EU from principle, and even the Great Bill Cash sought "reform" rather than abolition.

In his rush to re-write and re-interpret history, not once does Oborne mention Sir James Goldsmith. He is providing a smokescreen for the Tory europhiles, who saw political expediency in opposing British membership of the single currency, but nevertheless supported the EU as a political project - and continue to do so.

I am sorry, but I'm not impressed by Oborne. I'm saddened that UKIP – as so often – display their lack of political acumen, and rush to applaud this man on the basis of last night's performance. As one of Cameron's most ardent supporters, he is not our friend. He is the face of the enemy.
Oborne has done some very good work in the past but eurosceptics such as Oborne actively prop up europhiles like Cameron and that is an act of treachery by him towards the British people. The guilty men of today are to be found in the Conservative party.

For anyone inspired to read the original 'Guilty Men' the counter book 'The Left was Never Right' by Quintin Hogg is essential reading.

I dont think that Richard North could have been watching the same Newsnight programme as me, because I thought Peter Oborne was fabulous.

How many Anti-EU Patriots have actually got an EU spokesman to storm out of a studio in mid debate. Peter Oborne is a genius.

And what's more he did equally well on Question Time the very next evening 29th September 2011. The Question Time audiance were right behind him and could hardly contain themselves with rage against the EU.

Peter Oborne is the Chief Political Editor of the Telegraph and he is arguing for Britain to leave the European Union completely.

Peter Oborne is the messiah that all Anti-EU Patriots have been waiting for.

If the loss of ssuch a tiny part of the overall euro ecconomy, Greece, will destabilise and destroy the whole euro project it is a feeble and pathetic currency.

Imagine if the pound had been as hollow when the American colonies rebeled or when we gave up the empire after WWII.

The fundimental value of any currency is in the faith that people have in it. Clearly nobody has much faith in the euro.

The problem is that lots of people are clinging to it for political reasons. If they viewed it based on economic reasons it surely couldn't survive.

Superb point, Tim. I wish I had £1 for everyone of the doom-mongers that has been on radio and TV recently to say: 'If Greece defaults, it will be catastrophe, and if she leaves the euro, it will be the end of the entire universe'.

Well, translated, this means: 'We CAN'T let the euro fail, because it will display beyond argument that the whole, insane project was nothing but a ***ing great gamble with 3 of the world's largest economies. Our credibility - as progenitors and perpetuators of the EU project, will be well and truly screwed. Worse, it will mean countries going back to the 'nation state'.'

Peter Oborne - who I've never had much time for previously - was very engaging on QT last night, and was the only reason I watched. I would pay NOT to watch Street-Porter. (Billy Bragg next week - you know , preaches multiracialism and multiculturalism, we should all live side-by-side in harmony, actually lives in a hamlet on the Dorset coast.)

For me, Greece can go back to the drachma. Spain and Italy produce olives, and we make our own feta cheese here now.

Yeah, spot on I-UKIP. Smacks of "running with the hare, and hunting with the hounds." But it was the pricking of the self-regarding, cosy pomposity that I enjoyed the most.

I shall check out that book on your recommendation (Quentin Hogg as in Baron Hailsham of St Marylebone?)
