Default Popular Alliance - An Introduction

The Popular Alliance is a political party in the United Kingdom. It was formed in March 2006 by former members of Veritas and the United Kingdom Independence Party(UKIP), registered with the Electoral Commission on 3 March of that year

    Background

They campaign on a broadly populist agenda, believing that voters should be given aviable alternative to the three mainstream parties (Labour, the Conservatives and the LiberalDemocrats). With the slogan 'Traditional Values, Fresh Ideas,' they propose to 'restore British culture, tradition and history, especially in schools,'[2]scrap the Human Rights Act and cut mass immigration drastically, imposing strict quotas, a policy they say is necessary to stop theelectorate drifting towards supporting other extremist parties like the British National Party (BNP). Their agenda espouses action on major UK political issues like the National Health Service, crime, education and asylum. The party believes there should be referendums on capital punishment and Britain's membership of the European Union. They promote devolved government and the ability of people to trigger referendums on local or national issues if 5% of people petition for one, as they do in Switzerland.

In May 2007, the party gained two new councillors on Stretton Parish Council, Burton-upon-Trent.One of those councillors was Party Leader, Brian Buxton. A third councillor,Iain Sheldon, was elected in May 2008.

It fielded no candidates in the 2010 General Election.

In January 2011 Brian Buxton asked to step down and Craig Chapman was elected as leader.
The party is committed to forge alliances between like-minded parties, withthe ultimate goal that smaller parties representing the populist views can merge together and become an electable force.
