Please tell me, if Scotland did leave the Union, why do you think the UK would suddenly cease to exist and that the rest of us still in the Union could not continue to describe ourselves as 'British'.

So .... United Kingdom of England and Wales then. Why do you think we call ourselves British at the moment?

I know. I am a fiend for geography.

People are named or name themselves after contiguous areas of land. It's one of the oldest and most basic forms of geopolitics. The other method, of naming our collective by an "agreed" name leads to Balkan like names. Slav - Yugoslav - Serbia, Slovenia, etc. in less than a hundred years.

Canada was separated geopolitically from the United States by the British Empire and so due to complex geopolitics does not use the term "Americans".

You know, I think you talk a load of **** but I have the patience to counter your points without hyperbolic comments like that.

You've not been reading the posts. It is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain came into being with the union of England and Scotland. Without Scotland there is no Great Britain.

Then we come to what is a Union. How can England be in a union with 2 tiny countries? A union is based on equality. Tell you what, why don't we extend the Union to the Channel Islands and Isle of Man? Would you accept Jersey, with a population of 70,000, as the equal of England?

Here's another proposition for you. We call the new nation England, with crown dependency status given to Wales and Northern Ireland. Any objections?

You know, you haven't given me any reason as to why someone who lives in a country of 50 million should have their identity determined by a country of less than 3 million, or one of less than 2 million. That is not normal in the world.

I can only think you have a low opinion of England.

So 1+.1 = 1?
No. It equals 1.1. Kingdom of England + Kingdom of Wales equals Kingdom of South Britain if we want to get pedantic.
For your information I have a very high opinion of the English.

You are again incorrect.

Great Britain is a geographical term, not a political one. The reason it was called the Kingdom of Great Britain was because it encompassed the entire island of Great Britain, the larger area of Britanny.

You are again incorrect. It was a political union formed by dissolving two sovereign parliaments to form a new state, which so happened to be known as the Kingdom of Great Britain. This being the island of Great Britain plus other islands (Isle of Wight etc.)

Perhaps if they'd called it 'Kingdom of Oompah Loompah Land' we wouldn't have this confusion now.

The state was indeed a political union, the reason for it's name was the name of it's landmass.
England, of course, was named after the Angles, named for an influential group of it's people.
