Is 958 council candidates a good start for UKIP?

It isn't quite the 'over 1000' candidates promised by NF (unless we include parish and town councillors), but is it a good showing for Britain's fourth largest party?

Jonathan Arnott is/was the UKIP local elections coordinator, so his numbers should be reasonably accurate.

On the assumption that the 'ball park' number is just under 1000, is this good?

To put it in context, according to Iain Dale (who gave inaccurate UKIP numbers), the Tories have 9,264, Labour have 6,360, the Lib Dems have 6,667 and the BNP 717.

The Greens have 1,394 candidates.

I have added an 'It's OK' option to the poll. Having looked at the numbers, UKIP is putting in less than the greens, but more than the BNP. That's an OK start I think.

I would suggest that Greens are more committed and younger. I would be interested in occupations as well on the basis that some jobs require a longer working day then others

It's better than ever before and therefore is progress.

UKIP have never been interested enough in locals. If they can keep increasing this figure election on election, then that is progress.

In an ideal world they would run in every seat. This isn't an ideal world.

Don't forget UKIP is still a young party, compared to the Greens and Nazis.

It is good progress. It would have been nice to hit 1,000 but lets not be churlish about this. For years UKIP showed almost no interest in local elections. We are finally moving in the right direction but these things take time.

When some of the 958 are elected, can they operate as groups with group leaders. Seems this hasn't happened much before. I would think that getting councillors elected will help UKIP to be A. Not seen as a one-trick pony and B. Have some local political gravitas!

The party as a whole needs to act with some cohesion and not be seen as a bunch of nutters and fruitcakes (to quote some moron)

There must be coordination and cooperation at all levels
