The National Anthem - what should it be?

If we had to change the National Anthem for whatever reason, what would be your preferred anthem?

My preferences, in rank order would be:

- Jerusalem
- I vow to thee my Country
- Land of Hope and Glory
- God Save the Queen
- Rule Britannia

I've just voted to keep God Save The Queen

. It's the only clearly Royalist anthem on the list (at the top of the page).

As for that great work - Jerusalem. It can't be the anthem for the whole of the UK because it is specifically English.

I think that there are some people who would like to see Jerusalem used for events such as football matches where England is playing. The only problem is - would the fans remember the words? :shock:

I can recite them from memory, there aren't that many :P.

Also Britannist, IF the UK did split, would you keep God Save the Queen for just England?

Yes - I like Jerusalem too. But God Save The Queen shows that we are - quite rightly - a Royalist State.

The words of God Save The Queen (or much of it) are known by millions of people. I believe that while Jerusalem is a marvellous piece of music, some of those who are trying to get God Save The Queen dropped as our anthem are closet Republicans :evil: :evil: :evil: .

This was actually one of the very first topics ever discussed on this forum. My original point was that England should have an anthem (Land of Hope and Glory), but retain God Save the Queen for Britain.

This would equalise the British nations - Scotland and Wales both have their own anthems played at sporting events.
