The International Herald Tribune reports that the European Union's ministers of interior have agreed to proceed towards an integration of asylum and immigration policies.

Under the pact - so far a political accord rather than a binding legal document - EU nations pledge to expel illegal immigrants from European soil, to strengthen border controls and to seek a joint asylum policy by 2012.

Has anyone told the Tories who are placing the creation of a British border police at the heart of their manifesto?

So basically at the moment legal immigrants in the UK entail "British Commonwealth," "EEA Nationals," and those that are seeking "assylum." (An Explanation of Who is Eligible to Live in the UK - moneto.eu) So can't most illegal immigrants claim assylum to some extent? And isn't the US also having this debate about illegal mexican immigrants, or illegal immigrants in general? (Comprehensive Immigration Reform) It would make more sense just allowing them to stay based on cost issues and effort to track them down. Or is that an outrageous claim? It just seems that 'The West' is becoming increasingly more 'paranoid' (for lack of better word) about 'The East' or cultural 'outsiders' being in the western countries. It seems to be creating a tension throughout the world. Just my take...open to any responses
