    Default Retain the Act of Settlement 1701 e-petition

    I received this email and thought BDF readers may be interested. It apears to be a cross party initiative from Unionists and church groups, as well as some Tories. Anyone else received it?

    ---

    Dear Sir

    I have created an e-petition: Retain The Act of Settlement 1701.

    Here is the link for the same: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/21216

    Responsible department: Cabinet Office / Home Office
    http://www.royal.gov.uk/HistoryoftheMonarchy/KingsandQueensoftheUnitedKingdom/TheStuarts/MaryIIWilliamIIIandTheActofSettlement/TheActofSettlement.aspx The Act protects the Protestant Succession, establishes the Glorious Revolution Settlement and provides freedom of religious expression for all under the law.

    My aim in contacting your church, is:

    * to publicise my e-petition via your site and/or magazine and congregations;
    * to ensure the same is debated in Parliament; and also
    * to ensure the same receives many thousands of e-signatures, compared to the 107 who have signed the RC e-petition to abolish The Act!

    Yours In Christ

    Mark Cotterell

    PS By way of an update:

    It's now been live for 5 days and the good news is that someone signs it every 11 minutes (or every 4 minutes during office hours!)

    Why anyone in the 21st century has the slightest interest in Protestant succession is beyond me. The ceremonial head of state could be Bhuddist for all I care, as long as they've stood for election and got a mandate.
