It is alleged that the pro-EU Cameron-Conservatives approached the man now standing as the candidate for the europhile Liberal 'Democrats' in this week's London Mayoral Election contest to see if he would be their candidate instead -
"Tories asked Lib 'Dem' London Mayor candidate if he'd stand for them" (claim): The following is a brief extract from the Independent newspaper: "Mr. Paddick, a former senior Metropolitan Police officer, sent David Cameron an email asking if speculation that the Tories wanted him to be their man was true. The Tory leader quickly dispatched Francis Maude, a Shadow Cabinet member, for talks. "They promised me the Earth, all the money I could spend and professional back-up" said Mr Paddick. He turned the Tories down after discussing their offer with his mother, who said her own mother would have been appalled." A question of what might have been for candidate who turned down Tories - UK Politics, UK - The Independent London Mayoral Election 2008 candidates: Richard Barnbrook - British National Party, Gerard Batten - UK Independence Party, Siān Berry - Green Party, Alan Craig - Christian Peoples Alliance and Christian Party , Lindsey German - Left List, Boris Johnson - Conservative Party, Ken Livingstone - The Labour Party, Winston McKenzie - Independent, Matt O'Connor - English Democrats, Brian Paddick - Liberal Democrats.
